My name is Emilie Stump. I am an MSc-level fish, fisheries and protected species biologist. I have extensive field experience in nearshore and offshore marine settings and deep academic and operational knowledge of commercial fisheries, fisheries management programs, and fisheries observer / protected species observer programs. I have competed approximately 700 deployment days as fisheries-dependent data specialist, characterizing catch and by-catch in 5 unique commercial fisheries in the U.S. North Pacific (FAO Area 67) and U.S. Central Pacific/Pacific Islands (FAO Area 77) regions, with additional deployments as a dedicated Protected Species biologist in FAO areas 77, 31, and 21 (U.S. NE/SE Atlantic, U.S., West Coast, and U.S. Gulf regions).
I have led and participated in field-based surveys of fishes, invertebrates, and marine habitats of the Pacific Northwest/Salish Sea and the subtropical Caribbean, supported regional and global conservation initiatives in West and Central Africa, and am a published author, co-author, and illustrator of fishes.
This applied, front-line conservation work directly supports the implementation of Targets 4, 5, 10, 11, and 16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2030 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

TARGET 4: Halt Species Extinction, Protect Genetic Diversity, and Manage Human-Wildlife Conflicts
TARGET 5: Ensure Sustainable, Safe and Legal Harvesting and Trade of Wild Species
TARGET 10: Enhance Biodiversity Sustainability in Agriculture, Aquaculture, Fisheries, and Forestry
TARGET 11: Restore, Maintain and Enhance Nature’s Contributions to People
TARGET 16: Enable Sustainable Consumption Choices to Reduce Waste and Over-consumption
I have partnered with both public and private-sector organizations to advance these goals.
Overcoming the long-standing disconnect between fisheries management and biodiversity conservation agendas will take time, but the GBF provides an opportunity to do so, given that it provides clear expectations for both sets of objectives and already engages both fisheries and conservation organizations at multiple levels of governance
